Alvin (Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) want to win a $25,000 prize in the battle of the bands when they return to school. The contest is part of a Save The Music program at the school. They seem to have everything wrapped up when they meet the match of their lives. Three female chipmunks known as the Chipettes, Brittany (Christina Applegate), Eleanor (Amy Poehler) and Jeanette (Anne Faris) are giving them a run for their money in the contest.
